A Year's Journey: 5 January

Had no idea how much thought went into even contemplating a blog...#1) all the questions, and #2) all the other questions. So I took a break from the pressure and celebrated my honey's birthday. We made our annual trek with friends to see our favorite acoustic guitarist, Willy Porter. So witty and relaxed. And I'm pretty sure that was me...after a glass of wine or 12. Truly, Willy's talent is incredibly effortless, whimsical, meaningful, clever and his stage presence provides such a relaxed tone. Our favorite is when he improvises a song based on topics audience members throw out. Happy Brithday, Hon and Cheers to you, Willy.

Reflection

Welcome to this journal of thoughts, questions and stories of my personal journey this year ... and hopefully the stories of others who would like to join me along the way. I think everyone is on their own journey of enlightenment. This enlightenment may come in different forms – curiosity and consequences, life-altering experiences, simple joys – where personal epiphanies move the needle forward to who we are supposed to become. I refrain from saying a "journey of happiness"" because some experiences and lessons do not necessarily fill one’s heart with joy. But hopefully upon reflection, comes acceptance of oneself and others, personal growth, a state of calm and contentment may follow, then happiness may manifest.

Through many conversations in the past year – with men and women who are single, married, divorced, early 20s to mid-40s, executives, working and stay-at-home moms – I have learned that many of us ask the same question: what we are to do with our lives. Is there a bigger purpose for me? How did I get here? But I’m not done yet. Do my skillsets and heart (passion) intersect? Upon reflection of these conversations, I try to think of the glass as half-full. It’s not so much a regretful “How did my decisions get me here?”, but perhaps an empowering “How will I write my next chapter?”

My personal journey is about committing myself to trying something new every week (or so). Those around me know there is always something cooking, someone new to meet, someone to help, and too much fun to be had. This may be anything from interviewing someone at a shelter, to cliff diving in Mexico, to being the sous chef at a favorite restaurant. This journey is also about giving back, or simply telling someone’s story. I love this life we have been given and would like to appreciate it more. And to take those I love (and have yet to meet) with me. Though there will be some parameters, I refrain from giving a definitive time period because I may find I would like to stay in a certain experience a bit longer. This is not a “50 Things To Do Before I Die” list because there are things that I might look to help me understand why people do what they do, push me out of my comfort zone, or that I am simply curious about.

This is just a personal road trip... to see what these adventures will bring, what more lessons I may learn, what interesting and lovely people I will meet, and hopefully touch some lives along the way. The purpose for this journal is in part to hold me accountable, but more importantly, to hopefully inspire others to explore their own journey. Thank you, Dave Burkle, for inspiring me.
